Student Funding

The Asian Studies Center can help connect students to scholarships and awards that support their studies, research, and work in Asian language and culture.

The Shao-Chang Lee Scholarship Fund was established by friends and colleagues of the late Professor Shao-Chang Lee to provide scholarship awards to undergraduate students, as well as best paper competition awards to both graduate and undergraduate students at MSU. The fund supports students who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in Asian studies and who are pursuing, or plan to pursue, a program that includes Asian studies.

Application for S.C. Lee Scholarship or Paper Award for AY 2025-26 is now closed. Check back in December 2026 for the next round of award applications.


Dr. Delia Koo Global Student Scholarships

The Dr. Delia Koo Global Student Scholarship, administered by the Asian Studies Center, provides funding to support Michigan State University students - both domestic and international - engaged in globally focused academic activities related to Asia. 

  • Applications for Summer semester are due February 1
  • Applications for Fall semester are due July 1
  • Applications for Spring semester are due November 1

The David Cho Scholarships are awarded by the Council on Korean Studies Center at the Asian Studies Center. Recipients are selected based on academic performance and financial need. Special consideration will be given to students who promote an understanding of Korean culture and students that are U.S. veterans, ROTC members, and/or active members of the military.

The Richard Kichu & Joan Sojeon Moon Scholarships are awarded by the Council on Korean Studies at the Asian Studies Center. Recipients are selected based on academic performance and financial need with special consideration given to students who promoted an understanding of Korean culture through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities.


Aloud, YemenFLAS Fellowships

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are academic scholarships that provide funding and support to graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing Asian language and area studies.

The U.S. Department of Education has cancelled the FLAS Fellowship Program for Summer 2026 and AY 2026–2027.


BambooAdditional Scholarships & Awards

Additional scholarships and awards are available to students at Michigan State University pursuing study in Asian language and culture.
