The Asian Studies Center can help connect students to scholarships and awards that support their studies, research, and work in Asian language and culture.


Boren Scholarships and Fellowships

Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations. Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying critical or less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Swahili.

Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers funding to U.S. undergraduate students who wish to further their studies or take an internship abroad. The Gilman Scholarship Program greatly values international exchange, as it prepares U.S. students for interaction in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

Fulbright Scholar Programs

Fulbright Scholar Programs offer recent graduates and graduate students the opportunity to study, do research, and teach in over 140 countries. Fulbright offers over 1900 grants each year to students in any field. With a large number of Fulbright scholars around the world becoming a Fulbright scholar opens up a world of networking opportunities.

Schwarzman Scholars Program

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective, one-year master's program at Tsinghua University in Beijing that is designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders for the challenges of the future. Students will live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College, a newly-built, state-of-the-art facility, where all classes will be taught in English. Students will pursue degrees in one of three disciplines: Public Policy, Economics and Business, or International Studies

The Walker Hill International Award

The Walker Hill International Award is an award for doctoral students that can be used for pre-dissertation visits to a doctoral research site in a country outside the United States. International students who undertake research in the country of their origin are not eligible.

Claffey Meyer International Travel Grant

This award provides financial assistance to domestic students who intend to travel to developing countries for the purpose of providing technical assistance, participate in research, or engage in service. The intent is for students to work towards discovering and implementing solutions in response to urgent human needs (for example: food security, environmental quality, health and nutrition, education, and other areas) and, thereby, to encourage careers in international development teaching, research and practice. Grants are intended to support travel, related living expenses, and projects costs, not to be used as a tuition scholarship.

Dr. Charles and Marjorie Gliozzo Dissertation Research Scholarship

The Dr. Charles and Marjorie Gliozzo Dissertation Research Scholarship scholarship is available to MSU doctoral students with dissertation research objectives who have defended, or are in the process of defending, a dissertation proposal. The scholarship supports field research abroad in support of the student's dissertation.

Cultivating the Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) Research Grants in South and Southeast Asia

Cultivating the Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) Research Grants are available for short- (up to 2 months), medium (2-6 months), and long-term (12 months) research projects that advance the fields of the humanities and social sciences in South and Southeast Asia. Junior faculty, graduate students, senior or independent scholars, women, and ethnic minority groups with South or Southeast Asian nationality are encouraged to apply.

AAS East and Inner Asia Council (EIAC) Small Grants

The East and Inner Asia Council of the AAS (EIAC; formerly the China and Inner Asia Council [CIAC]) makes small grant awards of up to $2,000. Dissertation-level graduate students and scholars with special interests in China, Taiwan, or Inner Asia are invited to submit proposals. EIAC Small Grant awards are made possible through funding provided by the Chiang Ching-kuo (CCK) Foundation and from AAS member donations.
