Workshop Description: More and more Chinese language programs have encountered questions and doubts about students' needs and efficacy in learning the Chinese language and culture. Recently, Asia Society published a paper, The New Framework for Mandarin Language Education in PreK-Grade 12 Schools in the United States, to address these concerns in the AI age. Blending insights from studies on global competence, language education, bilingualism and biliteracy development, cognitive development, and general education, this paper provides educators with practical suggestions on curriculum, instruction, assessment, and how to establish and sustain language programs. It gives a fresh perspective on Mandarin education in light of our era’s unique technological and socio-cultural shifts. We are pleased to invite its author, Dr. Shuhan Wang, to lead this workshop. Together, we will explore innovative ways of teaching and learning Mandarin language and Chinese cultures in today's dynamic global landscape. Participants will also develop useful tools for advocating their Chinese language programs.
