The Midwest Japan Seminar (MJS) is an association of scholars who devote a significant portion of their effort to Japan studies. The seminar meets five times a year at various host institutions throughout the Midwest, once in conjunction with the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA).
The 2026 Midwest Japan Seminar is scheduled for Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25. The program includes a special performance on Friday evening and a keynote address on Saturday evening.
The seminar typically runs for four hours on Saturday, followed by the keynote address. Two scholars will present their current research, with papers circulated in advance to encourage in-depth discussion and feedback. Graduate students with an interest in Japan are especially welcome to attend.
Friday, April 24: Special Performance — Michiyoshi Sato & Kotobuki Band (Community Music School, 7:00–8:00 p.m.).
Saturday, April 25: Keynote Address by Professor Koichi Nakano (Sophia University, Japan) — “Democracy, Stunted: The U.S. Liberal Hegemonic Projection and the Making of Japanese Conservative One-Party Dominance in Cold War Asia” (Brody Hall Auditorium, Room 112, 4:00–5:30 p.m.)
