Speakers: Dr. Santosh Raut and Dr. Jon Keune Growing out of his earlier work as an attorney, scholar, statesman, and social activist, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's vision of Buddhism went beyond the conventional boundaries of religion and spirituality. His legacy among Ambedkarite Buddhists since the mass conversions in 1956 has been similarly complex, as Ambedkarites continue to explore what Buddhism might mean and do for them in their personal, social, and political lives. In this public talk, Dr. Santosh Raut (an Ambedkarite Buddhist philosophy professor and community leader) and Dr. Jon Keune (who is researching transnational Buddhism and Ambedkarite migration) will discuss the diverse forms of leadership that have emerged among Ambedkarites over the past 70 years as Ambedkarites strive to improve their communities' living conditions and work for social equality.

We are thrilled by the outpouring of interest in our planned Michigan Fulbright Symposium to be held in East Lansing on Saturday, April 12, 2025. We're excited to offer this opportunity to share your Fulbright experiences and network with Fulbrighters from around the state.

To Present a Poster or Session

Many people expressed interest in sharing a 20-minute presentation or a poster about their research, teaching, or cultural experience. While we welcome anyone interested in simply attending the symposium, we hope many of you will follow up and submit a presentation idea, as these conversations will form the heart of our gathering.

Many of you may have heard about devastating recent developments in the Fulbright program. Last Wednesday, the International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) staff were told that their "organizational unit is being abolished along with all positions within the unit." IFLE, within the Department of Education, administered all Fulbright-Hays awards. The very next day, most staff at the Institute of International Education (IIE) were furloughed. IIE has administered the Fulbright US Student and Scholar awards--as well as the awards for visiting students, scholars, and professionals--on behalf of the Department of State for nearly 80 years. We do not yet know the long-term impact these actions will have, but we are moving forward with the symposium in the spirit of solidarity and recognizing the profound impact the Fulbright program has had on the world since 1946.

We hope to see many of you in East Lansing in just a few short weeks, and look forward to this opportunity to gather with Fulbrighters from around the state to learn and share.
