Organized by the MSU Asian Studies Center and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) at the University of Pittsburgh, the 2026 Teaching Modern East Asia Summer Foundational Seminar is a free, in-person professional development opportunity for K-12 educators. This year’s seminar introduces the modern histories and cultures of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Participants will work closely with MSU faculty to deepen their understanding of East Asia and discover innovative, practical ways to bring this content into their classrooms.

The seminar features interactive lectures, hands-on activities, pedagogy workshops, and discussions on classroom resources and instructional strategies. Benefits include a $300 stipend, $230 in free teaching materials, the option to earn 30 SCECH hours (pending approval), and NCTA alumni status for future short courses and study tours. Limited funding is available to subsidize lodging for participants traveling 50 miles or more to MSU’s East Lansing campus. Lunches will be provided each day.
