Rome felt like living in a movie. I’d pass historic buildings on my way to get espresso, and I felt like a local. I started picking up basic Italian just by ordering food or asking for help in stores. I didn’t become fluent or anything, but knowing a few phrases helped me feel more connected to the people around me. Traveling also pushed me to figure things out on my own. I had to get used to public transportation and adjust when things didn’t go according to plan. It made me more confident in myself and my ability to be independent.
Cannes was an entirely different kind of amazing. I got to attend the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, which is one of the biggest events in the advertising world. I sat in talks with major CEOs and creatives and even got the chance to chat with some of them afterward. They shared advice that felt personal and real, not just stuff you hear in class. One person told me to follow what excites me and trust that it’ll lead somewhere meaningful. That stuck with me, especially seeing as it was an influencer I have been following for years.
A lot of people assume studying abroad is just about having fun in another country, but there’s so much more to it. Yes, I had fun, but I also learned more about my field, experienced new cultures firsthand, and grew in ways I didn’t expect. It was a mix of personal growth, professional inspiration, and unforgettable moments.
Before the program, I wasn’t totally sure I could handle being so far from home. Now I feel more prepared for anything. If someone’s on the fence about studying abroad, I’d say try it. It can change the way you see yourself and your future in the best way.
