Learning the benefits of a Mediterranean diet

As a Pre-Medical student, I will use the knowledge I have gained about the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle patterns prevalent in Spain and Sicily when forming care plans for my patient in the future, with the understanding that these factors can help reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.

Photo of an orange tree with a white horse eating grass in the backgroundDuring the 3 weeks I spent abroad, I had the opportunity to travel with 29 other Michigan State University students and faculty with intentions to study the influence of geography, climate, diet, and history on food patterns and health outcomes in Spain and Sicily.

During our time abroad, we examined human nutrition focusing specifically on the Mediterranean pattern of eating and its beneficial effects on reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease; the leading risk factor for death in the United States. Additionally, we learned the production processes and nutrient profiles surrounding food products including olive oil, wine, wheat, and citrus; which are largely produced in both Spain and Sicily.

As a Pre-Medical student, I will use the knowledge I have gained about the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle patterns prevalent in Spain and Sicily when forming care plans for my patient in the future, with the understanding that these factors can help reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.

Not only did this experience help to expand my education Photo of fresh vegetables radishes, turnip, squash, cucumberglobally, but it also allowed me to gain a new appreciation for diversity and cultural differences.

I was also given the chance to face challenges I never thought I would be capable of persevering through, including learning how to navigate a new city and communicate through a language barrier.

I can confidently say I would recommend completing a study abroad program as I truly got the most out of my time and program due to the fascinating and useful knowledge my professors and location-based mentors during the program. This expertise is something I would have never experienced if I were to travel outside of a study abroad program.

Studying abroad with the Global Food Systems and Health program was truly the opportunity of a lifetime, and it wouldn't have been possible without your help!
