Spring 2021 Webinar Series

In recent decades, people living in the Lower Mekong Region have witnessed major shifts from predominantly subsistence agriculture to industrializing economies, with attendant changes in migration, crop production systems, and major infrastructure (roads, dams, industrial estates). This series of four webinars will explore how communities in the region are experiencing the economic, social, and cultural dislocations of these transformations.

Aisha Farooqui is a Pakistani diplomat with a diverse career profile spanning more than two decades. She has served abroad in Pakistan's missions in France, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Turkey and the United States, as well as at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad.

She believes that diplomats worldwide are bridges that connect people, cultures, and countries. There is no greater caring than to contribute toward greater understanding and harmony between diverse people, in the interest of global harmony and order. She is the author of Musings of a Nomad: Essays on Life and Living, published in 2018.

Sania Hashmi, Film Maker Anhad Films.

As the managing partner of Anhad Films, Sania Hashmi has been involved with film making for past 15
years. Before establishing her own media company in
2010, Sania has done voice-overs and playback for
documentaries and short films for Riverbank Studio,
Progressive films, Credence Media Solutions, etc since
the age of 12. In 2006 she worked as assistant director
on "Say Salaam India", directed by Subhash Kapoor.
In 2007 she assisted and researched for a film on Bhagat Singh called Inquilab, directed by Gauhar Raza. She briefly dabbled in corporate films, but soon
quit the same for the world of documentary films.
Several films co-directed by her were selected,
screened and awarded at various national and
international film festivals.

The Hindi-Urdu Language Club presents English Vinglish, a 2012 Indian comedy-drama film, written and directed by Gauri Shinde. The narrative revolves around a woman named Shashi, a small entrepreneur who makes snacks. Shashi enrolls in an English-speaking course to stop her husband and daughter mocking her lack of English skills and gains self-respect in the process. The protagonist, played by Sridevi, was inspired by Shinde's mother.
