Childhood in Asia: Multiple perspectives through children’s literature

 

Teaching Modern East Asia Summer Foundational Seminar for K-12 Educators

This workshop will focus on three children’s literature each representing childhood in a different Asian country. Through discussion and exploration of each book characters’ thoughts, words, and actions, participants will gain insights into their cultural beliefs and values; understand background on historical events; learn nonfiction resources at a reading (or read-aloud) level that are consumable by students who might experience the book in class; and know a sampling of companion books both at higher and lower reading levels sharing themes common to the featured book. Teachers of all grade levels are welcome to attend, but we think K-6 teachers would benefit the most.

Benefits: Each participant will receive a Certificate of Completion. The first 20-30 participants who register and attend the workshop will receive the book Morning Sun in Wuhan.
