Organized by the MSU Asian Studies Center and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) at the University of Pittsburgh,the 2024 Summer Seminar on Modern East Asia is a professional development opportunity for K-12 educators to learn about China, Japan, and Korea, interact with MSU faculty, and discover practical, innovative ways to bring this content into their classrooms. This program includes fun, hands-on activities, and discussions. This summer’s seminar will be from July 29 (Monday) to August 2 (Friday), 2024.It is free and comes with benefits including  a  $300  stipend, $230 worth of free books and teaching materials, option for 30 SCECH hours (pending approval), and status as an alum for future NCTA short courses and study tours. If a teacher lives more than 50 miles away from MSU’s campus, we have (limited) funding to cover (most) of the costs for those teachers to stay in a dorm room or nearby hotel room.

Applicants must be a K-12 educator based in Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. This summer's seminar may be of particular interest to those teaching history, social studies, geography, politics, international relations, and world languages or literature but teachers of any subject areas are encouraged to apply if East Asia is in some way relevant to what they do. We are eager to have a diverse group of educators, including people who teach a wide range subjects, librarians, administrators, etc. Before applying, we ask that teachers review the dates and times and check their schedules.
