Harrison walking through a garden in AsiaMy time abroad in Vietnam and Singapore was an eye-opening journey that enriched my academic and personal growth, provided invaluable cultural insights, and honed my communication skills in a non-English speaking environment.

Starting in Hanoi, we visited the Samsung R&D Center, and Canon Thang Long factory, and engaged with AmCham representatives. These experiences offered a deep dive into global business operations and market dynamics. Visiting Coca-Cola and Universal Alloy Da Nang further solidified my understanding of brand management and global supply chains. Each company visit provided practical insights that complemented my academic pursuits, especially within Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business and clarified my career aspirations.

On a personal level, the journey through Vietnam was transformative. The visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison provided profound historical insights, deepening my appreciation for Vietnam's rich history and resilience. Crafting pottery in Bat Trang and tailoring clothes in Hoi An offered hands-on cultural immersion, making me more adaptable and culturally sensitive.Group of students holding an MSU sign i n Vietnam

Navigating a non-English speaking environment in Vietnam enhanced my communication skills significantly. Whether it was ordering food at local restaurants or engaging in business discussions, I learned to overcome language barriers through non-verbal cues and basic Vietnamese phrases. This experience boosted my confidence in cross-cultural communication, a crucial skill in today's globalized world.

The hospitality and vibrancy of the Vietnamese and Singaporean cultures shattered my preconceived notions about education abroad. Initially, I expected a more rigid and formal interaction, but the warmth and openness of the people we met made the learning experience incredibly dynamic and interactive. From enjoying authentic Vietnamese cuisine at Hoang Restaurant to savoring diverse Street scene in Asiaflavors at Singapore's Anatolia Restaurant, the culinary journey alone was a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of these nations.

This testimonial speaks directly to future students, parents, friends, and donors. Imagine walking through the historic streets of Hanoi, experiencing the bustling life along the Mekong Delta, or marveling at the Golden Bridge in Ba Na Hills. These vivid experiences, coupled with educational insights, paint a compelling picture of what studying abroad can offer. For students from underrepresented groups or first-generation college students, my story serves as a beacon of possibility and inspiration, demonstrating that such enriching experiences are within reach.

As a first-generation college student, this program was particularly impactful. It showed me that despite financial and social barriers, the world is accessible and full of learning opportunities. This journey through Vietnam and Singapore wasn’t just about academic enrichment; it was a testament to personal growth, cultural appreciation, and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead when we step out of our comfort zones.

In conclusion, my time abroad in Vietnam and Singapore was a transformative experience that broadened my horizons, enriched my academic and career goals, and provided deep cultural insights. It is an experience I wholeheartedly recommend to any student seeking to expand their worldview and enhance their personal and professional growth.
