Arabic Diwan is a gathering of Arabic students who are in the Arabic program, where they speak the language and learn about the culture in a relaxed environ­ment with our Fulbright teaching assistant. Students from all Arabic language levels are encouraged to attend. Also, we extend the invitation to the Arabic speaking students at the English Center.

Baran​ is the story of Afghan refugees told through the eyes of an Iranian teenage boy named Lateef. His devotion to a person he barely knows leads him to the choice that will change his life forever. Acadamey Award nominated director Majid Majidi ("Children of Heaven", "Color of Paradise") delivers a heartbreaking story of unrequited love.

The Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA) 2020 Annual Meeting will be an online event. Michigan State University is pleased to co-host and manage the virtual platform. The MCAA seeks to promote Asian Studies at the university,  secondary, and primary levels, and particularly to encourage scholarly interchange between Asianists in the Midwest as well as with those from other parts of the country and the world. Scholars and students from all regions are invited to participate.

Artist talk by MSU Artist-in-Residence Qais Assali Date 10/17/2018

Qais Assali (b. 1987 Palestine) is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor and Artist-in-Residence of Critical Race Studies in the Art, Art History, and Design Dept. of Michigan State University. His works with video, installation, sculpture, lecture performance, sound, photography, and in the archives seek to engage and subvert national geopolitical power dynamics. His interdisciplinary work stages questions between site and the body in relation to his own identity and locale in order to debunk metaphoric surrounding contested geographies.


Assali's work has been internationally exhibited at Jeune création, Paris (2016); 6018North, Chicago (2018); Festival Artes Vertentes de Tiradentes, Brazil (2016); The Overlook Place, Chicago (2018); solo exhibitions at Khan Al Wakala, Nablus (2016); and Akademirommet, Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2015). Assali has been a faculty member at a number of academic institutions in Palestine including Al-Ummah College, Jerusalem. Assali holds two master's degrees – an M.F.A. from Bard College, New York and an M.A. in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
