Description: Since crossing over from southern China, the Hmong have become an integral part of Laotian history. In 1960, more than 300,000 Hmong in northern Laos were drawn into the Laotian civil war. When the United States entered Southeast Asian to prevent the spread of communism the CIA formed a secret partnership with the Hmong which lasted 15 years. More than 30,000 Hmong troops - under the leadership of General Vang Pao - operated out of Long Cheng to spearhead the American initiative. This war the Hmogn fought with American financial and military support became known as the "secret war" in Laos. After the U.S. withdrew from Southeast Asia in 1975, Prime Minister Souvana Phouma forced Vang Pao's resignation. Vang Pao then left for Thailand and eventually emigrated to the U.S., leaving Laos to the communists.
