  • Steve Hanson, Associate Provost and Dean for International Studies and Programs, Michigan State University

Our collaborative research project, Mekong Culture WELL: Advancing Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies of Water, Ecology, Land and Livelihoods in the Lower Mekong River Basin, is anchored in a common goal of equity and collaboration to address water, ecology, land and livelihoods (WELL) security of the 60 million people who live in the ecologically vital Mekong River region. In the past decade alone, the Mekong River and millions of people whose cultures have nourished and sustained its tremendous biodiversity for generations have been subjected to unprecedented and potentially irreversible ruptures.

The need for truly collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary research, education and outreach is urgent in order to address these dislocations in sustainable and just ways. Our project draws strength and insights from our diverse, international partners, and we are grateful to the Luce Initiative on Southeast Asia for supporting our collaboration.

AAP Consortium partners:

  • Alex Kahi, Professor of Animal Breeding and Genomics, Dept of Animal Sciences, and AAP Focal Point Egerton University, Kenya

  • Dorothy Ngila, Director Knowledge Networks and SGCI Strategic Partnerships, National Research Foundation of South Africa and AAP Advisory Board Member

  • The AAP consortium model, co-created in 2016 by African thought leaders and MSU faculty and administrators, was designed to reframe traditional north-south power imbalances in international partnerships. AAP's goal is to become more Africa centered through intentional engagement across the consortium in agenda setting, mobilizing research and innovation funding, and promoting and translating excellent and impactful research that will improve and transform lives in Africa.

This approach requires a paradigm shift, understanding what we really mean by equitable and sustainable, clarity on the institutional roles and responsibilities, the tools available to facilitate transformative partnerships, and the learning needed by both researchers and professional staff to support these partnerships. They will share the important successes of how the AAP consortium is challenging preconceived ideas, leading to new ways of engagement in US/Africa partnerships and the work that we are continuing to innovate to support impactful transformative equitable partnerships with Africa.

Join the 2022 Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month Kick-Off with Chef Jon Kung. We will have an in-person and a virtual option for attendees. The kick-off event is on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 from 6:30pm-8:30pm. For those of you joining us in-person, we will be in the MSU Union Ballroom. There will be free giveaways, snacks, and t-shirts for in-person attendees. Chef Jon will be doing a cooking demo, talking about his experience, and answering questions.

Jon Kung is a rising star and self-taught chef hailing from Detroit, Michigan. A self-described "Third Culture Kid," Jon always felt he grew up with his feet firmly planted in two different worlds; the culture the country his parents immigrated from, Hong Kong, and the culture of the adoptive countries he grew up in, America and Canada. Before the Covid-19 Pandemic, the only way to experience Jon's unique cooking and personality were at one of his private dinners or dumpling classes in Detroit. But in 2020, Jon launched a TikTok account with 60 second daily cooking demos that have garnered him more than 2 million followers and tens of millions of views across his social platforms.
