Dr. Michael Dylan Foster, Professor of Japanese and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Davis will explore the cultural history of the kappa, a folkloric water sprite of Japan. We will also examine other supernatural creatures form the broad category called yokai, and discuss the kappa-related animated film, Summer Days with Coo (2007).

Aulcie is a documentary about an African American basketball
player from Newark, who moved to Israel to join Maccabi Tel
Aviv's basketball team, converted to Judaism, changed his name
to Elisha Ben Abraham and began dating Israeli supermodel Tami
Ben Ami. Tragically, Aulcie was eventually arrested and jailed for
narcotics smuggling, the end result of a growing addiction to
drugs. Now committed to uplifting others confronting the disease
of addiction and abuse, Aulcie works with youth in Israel and
across the world. Director Dani Menkin has captured the essence
of the harrowing tale of its adopted and much-beloved son, in the
true story of Maccabi Tel Aviv's legendary player, Aulcie.

A two- time Israeli Academy Award winner, Dani Menkin's narrative and
documentary films include Picture of His Life, On the Map, Aulcie, Dolphin
Boy, 39 Pounds of Love, and Is That You? His movies have been sold to
Disney and HBO. Menkin is an internationally renowned speaker and film
juror at International Festivals, as well as a film professor in universities and
colleges in Israel and the U.S. He co-founded Hey Jude Productions. Menkin
is known for exploring the courage of the human life through personal
stories. He connects the extraordinary heroes of his films to a larger context,

Fulbright facts:
• Fulbright is a prestigious grant program funded by the US Department of State that enables US citizen faculty and other professionals to do research and/or teach in some 150 countries.
• Fulbright Scholar grants range from a few months to a full year and many awards offer flexible durations; some offer a Flex option designed for Scholars who require multiple visits to the host country.
• Awards vary, but generally provide round-trip airfare and a maintenance allowance based on living costs in the host country (including for accompanying dependents).
• The competition opened in February; the national deadline is September 15 for most programs.

Co-sponsored by the Office for Education Abroad and the Office for International Students and Scholars, the Annual MSU Learning Abroad Conference (LAC) features presentations from students returned from international learning experiences and international students currently studying abroad here in East Lansing. Since its inception in 2012, over 300 students have presented at the annual conference. Domestic and International students from all academic levels—first year undergraduates to doctoral students—and a variety of academic disciplines have participated. They have utilized the LAC as an opportunity to share their education abroad experiences with fellow students, family, friends, and the greater MSU community. Presentations include a variety of formats such as poetry, journal entries, music compositions, video, and more.
The 2022 conference will consist of two in-person panels, where students will share how their education abroad experiences address issues related to the conference theme: Growing through Challenge: Learning Abroad in a Time of Change. This panel of HALE MA current students and/or alumni will share their career trajectories in postsecondary education with a focus on global higher education (e.g., area studies, branch campuses, international student offices, and so on). More specifically, they will reflect on their leadership journey throughout their respective careers and in their present roles. Panelists will also offer advice to aspiring postsecondary education leaders, and reflect on the impact the HALE program had on their professional development in global higher education.
