Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, consisting of about 1200 individual islands, most of which are uninhabited. Once a British colony, Maldives still has close ties to the UK as a member of the commonwealth. It has joined with the other island nations of the Indian Ocean, (Mauritius, the Comoros, Madagascar, and the Seychelles) in promoting the Indian Ocean as a free trade and a zone of peace. Its economy relies on fishing, agriculture and increasingly on tourism.
