While Bangladesh is a new nation, having been established in 1971 after a bitter and violent struggle to separate from West Pakistan, it has a long history as a part of a number of Indian Empires for 2000 years. Formerly part of the province of Bengal in India, Bangladesh inhabits a rich alluvial delta area. While it has seen both Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms, today it is the world’s second most populous Islamic nation, with its own particular blend of Islamic and Bangla (Bengali) traditions. Although it is an economically poor nation, once dubbed an “International basket case” it is home to one of the World’s most innovative and successful development programs in the Grameen Bank which supports rural women and development.
