Afghanistan has always been a crossroads between East and West Asia, North and South Asia. As a result, it has been invaded, conquered and colonized by many ethnic, religious, political, and tribal groups for several thousand years. Consequently, its history is both rich in cultural diversity and filled with battles, revolts and struggles for autonomy by the diverse ethnic groups which make up the nation. Today’s Afghanistan: its tribal balances and rivalries, its religious makeup, its military omnipresence, its linguistic complexity, its fierce desire for independence and self determination, are all a reflection of its past.
