The So-Called Arab Spring
Tuesday, 17 Oct 2017
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
303 International Center
Asian Studies Center
Event Details:

Ambassador Mack, Middle East Institute Scholar and former U.S. Ambassador approachs these questions from the perspective of over 50 years as a scholar of the region and first-hand diplomatic experience.

What led to the political upheavals of 2010 and 2011 in the Arab World?

Why did the events send some countries into a collapse and a spiral of violence that is still underway seven years later?

Why did other Arab countries seem to suffer minimal effects?

What were the factors that were favorable and unfavorable for an orderly political change?

Was there anything that the United States should have done to ameliorate the process?

How should we deal with the results as we adjust to the radical change in the Middle East and North Africa?

There will be a reception to follow.

Sponsored by the Asian Studies Center, and the Center for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies.
